DYNO INFORMATION

What is a dyno?
A dynamometer or "dyno" for short, is a machine used to measure torque and rotational speed (rpm) from which power produced by an engine. The two most popular types of dynos are "break/load bearing" and "inertia" dynos.
An Inertia dynamometer provides a fixed inertial mass load and calculates the power required to accelerate that fixed, known mass (the roller) and uses a computer to record rpm and acceleration rate to calculate torque. So the inertia dyno calculates horsepower by how quickly the engine spins the roller with no load applied. One example of an inertia dyno is a Dynojet dyno. These numbers are typically 13-15% higher than a load bearing dyno because of how it calculates the speed or the roller.

A Brake or load bearing dynamometer applies variable load on the engine and measures the engine's ability to move or hold the rpm as related to the "braking force" applied. It is usually connected to a computer which records the applied braking torque and calculates the power output of the engine based on information from a "load cell" or "strain gauge" and rpm (speed sensor). These dynos are able to simulate exactly the load and stress an engine experiences driving daily or down a race track and calculates horsepower and torque with consideration to these conditions, providing the most accurate numbers possible.

The Dyno Dynamics dyno uses eddy current brake to apply variable load conditions to the engine. Eddy brake dynamometers are currently the most common absorbers used in modern chassis dynos. The eddy current absorbers provide the quickest load change rate for rapid load settling.

Dynamometer testing:
Steady State or partial throttle tuning (only on brake/load bearing dynamometers). The engine is held at a specified rpm (or series of usually sequential rpms) by loading the engine appropriately using function of the eddy. Utilizing an engine management software, tuners can adjust the air/fuel mixture and boost levels (where applicable) at partial throttle driving by simulating these conditions and this provides the absolute best driveability and fuel management on modified vehicles.

Sweep Test or power pulls. This is where the engine is tested under a load, but allowed to "sweep" up in rpm in a continuous fashion, from a specified lower "starting" rpm to a specified "end" rpm. This is usually done a series of 3 - 4 times and will provide a peak horsepower and torque number.

Why do DynoJet numbers seem higher?
The creator of the DynoJet dyno was featured in HotRod Magazine describing how the numbers are calculated.
